Poker is a fun thing, especially tournaments, because sometimes they can just be boring; which, given that the idea is to have fun, seems a bit backwards to me.

Now I love playing poker as much as anyone else (or maybe more), and I especially love tournaments; you make a bet and know in advance that you probably won't see it again, but that's okay, you're ready to play and have fun (at least that's my philosophy).

But I have to admit, I've sat through tournaments before and realized that I was bored. So I decided to write this list of tips for myself and all you tournament fans; on how to stay fresh, excited and alert.

Play in small tournaments

Big tournaments lure you with the lure of big prizes, but your chances of winning are actually pretty slim. If you have the mentality that you play for fun, smaller tournaments make sense - you progress faster, and often the atmosphere is better.

Play for fun

It should actually go without saying, but if you lose sight of the fact that it's supposed to be fun, it can start to frustrate you. Think of your tournament wager as the cost of the party. If you can think of something you'd rather do with that money, then you shouldn't risk it. When you understand this, it will allow you to enjoy the games you play, knowing that even if you lose, you had a good night.

People are watching.

The game of poker requires a lot of sitting around, not playing. Many people struggle with this by gambling too much and trying to cause action (gambling to relieve boredom is bad, by the way). Try to make a habit of watching what's going on and trying to figure out what's going on; try to figure out what people playing might have, it's a lot of fun when you guess correctly. This is great for your game, and it's fun too.

Take a walk

Some people wouldn't even dream of leaving the table in the middle of a tournament, what if you miss a really good hand? But if you start dreaming, you probably need to go and shake things up. Sometimes a little break can be better for your game than the game itself. Determine when you're tired or fatigued, and make 5.

Talk to your opponents

Sometimes poker can be surprisingly anti-social, but remember that your opponents probably want to have fun too. Talking to people is fun, and it will make you enjoy the evening more - plus it may even give you an insight into how other people play the game.
